learning and practicing kindness

Common SEL program teacher collaboration times have continued and teachers have reported that the time set aside to discuss and share ideas for bringing SEL to the forefront of the classroom has been effective to create a culture of learning when it comes to conflict resolution, self-regulation and building a supportive community within the classroom and the school.

The purpose and goals of each meeting are set up by the teachers and guided through each session with 3 key questions:

Share recent experiences:

  • What worked and what didn’t work from the previous action plan?\

Action plan:

  • What are we going to try next?
  • What is necessary in getting the action plan in progress?

Regular meetings help to keep the momentum of planning and learning fresh.  Learning is also better when we are doing it together!

While these meetings are happening, students have been engaged in activities targeted to practicing co-operation, turn taking, activities to explicitly reflect on kindness and its effects on themselves and others.

The focus has so far has been:

  • Positive change in simple acts like “Good Morning”, “Thank you”, “You are welcome”.
  • Staying “Good game” and “Thank you for playing with me”.
  • Reflecting and internalizing the effects of kindness, showing respect for ourselves and others.
